Chapter 5: The Diagnostic

# Chapter 5: The Diagnostic

The Orrery Chamber was colder at midnight.

Alistair stood before the central crystal, his father's aetheric probe humming against his palm. The smoke within the sphere swirled slowly, forming no shapes, offering no greeting. He had returned without telling Theron. Without telling Pip. He had come because the note in his pocket burned, and because the question Elara had asked would not stop echoing in his skull.

*Do you know what it is to be saved?*

He raised the probe. The diagnostic was meant to identify degradation patterns, to map the loops where memory frayed into chaos. But as the crystal sphere warmed beneath his touch, something else emerged — a second signal, buried beneath the primary loop like a whisper beneath a scream.

*He did not build me to save me*, Elara's voice said, soft and clear. *He built me to replace me.*

The probe shrieked. The crystal flared white.

And Alistair saw.

Evander Vance, younger by a century, standing before this same sphere as his daughter lay dying in his arms. He saw the calculation in Evander's eyes — not grief, but assessment. The weighing of a flawed original against the perfect copy he could construct. He saw Evander lay Elara's body on the stone and turn to the Orrery, his hands already reaching for the controls.

*I will make a better one*, Evander had whispered. *One that will not fall.*

The vision shattered. Alistair stumbled backward, the probe falling from his grip, its casing cracked and smoking.

The woman in the crystal was staring at him, her copper eyes wide.

*Now you know*, she said. *I am not his daughter. I am his correction.*

The chamber's gears ground to a halt. The spheres stopped turning. In the sudden silence, Alistair heard footsteps — not human, but the stutter-step of Pip, approaching fast.

And behind them, slower, heavier — the measured tread of Theron Vance.

Alistair grabbed the broken probe and ran.
